Once application is accepted, a staff member will contact you to set up a site visit to see the land, analyze the site and discuss your priorities. A buffer design plan will be created and you will have the opportunity to review before installation. Planting occurs during February-April and November-December. Some locations may need site preparation before planting can occur. We will evaluate the buffer for the first three years and provide maintenance, as needed, to help establish a healthy streamside forest.

Each buffer project is unique. The implementation time of your buffer project will depend on your individual site plan. There are two planting seasons each year: Fall runs from November to December and Spring runs from February to April. We will implement your project within the earliest possible season.

4 criteria for application

  1. My property is within the eligible area in the James River watershed.
  2. I want to improve water quality and habitat on my land and for downstream neighbors.
  3. I have water on my property in need of a forested buffer.
  4. I agree to keep the area forested for 15 years or more.
